'King Me' by Alistu 'King Me' by Alistu
This is my entry for the Good vs. Evil; Bring Your Vision to Life contest.

Seems as though good doesn't always win, but the game's not over yet.

I know there are already a lot of angel/devil and chess themed images that have been submitted but I wanted to do this as I thought it would be good practice to try and colour more realistically than I usually do. Plus they are playing draughts (checkers), not chess.
The angel's hair was an experiment on my part seeing as I usually suck at hair. I think it turned out well.

If I had a subscription, this is one piece I would be asking for critique on. ;)
Let me here your thoughts please.

i do like your experiment with hair shading on this one ^^
i think your shading is improving, it's areas like that where i know i need more life drawing experience.
i keep finding my eyes are drawn to their ribs oO
but, that could just be my weird head ><

I'd say the ribs are the part that gave me the most troubles.
Its good to know my shading appears to be improving though and that the hair looks good.

Shading on this is beautiful. Are you still hand inking?

Thanks very much.
Yup, still inking stuff traditionally. I tweak it a bit when it's scanned if I made a mistake or noticed something a bit off but otherwise the lines are all traditional.

Wonderful job, posing the characters. Their positions really emphasizes the frustration in the angel, and the haughty attitude of the demon. Also, I think your checkers twist on the common game theme is quite refreshing, and the overall metaphor of the game not quite being over is very well thought out.

The colouring could use some work, though, especially in areas such as the ribs - these probably should have been defined with harder lines. The background also appears to have been something of an afterthought.

Thanks very much for the feedback. I really appreciate it.

The ribs did originally have harder, more defined lines but I felt that they stood out too much and I'm really not that certain when it comes to anatomy so decided to tone them down. Maybe I took it a bit too far?

I did originally plan to have this background. I just suck at backgrounds more than hair.

Hahaha, yeah, I used to be really terrible at backgrounds - I still can't pull off backgrounds with anything particularly concrete in it unless I'm plenty motivated, and have lots of time.

As for the ribs, you might want to try keeping the lines, but lowering the opacity. The idea is to keep the hard edge of the line, as opposed to something blurrier. That way, it would not clash with the rest of the outlining.

Well, I've just been into Photoshop and tried out what you suggested but I think I'll leave it as it is.
It looked ok-ish on the demon but stood out too much on the angel. I think the original lines are probably not the greatest to begin with.
I'm satisfied with the current look of it but will certainly know what to try next time I attempt a similar image.
Thanks.
